“We aim to build a power plant that uses
clean coal technology to provide electricity from the Dawei project,”
Thaung Lwin, the committee’s chairman, told a press conference on July
27. The power plant is to be installed at a capacity of 600 mega watt
and to be completed by 2017.
“In the 1960s, Japan’s coal-fired power
plants produced a lot of smoke and ash. Now, clean coal technology has
reduced those wastes. In fact, to get such technology is one reason why
we are inviting Japan [to engage in Dawei Project],” he noted.
Two small power plants that will use
liquefied natural gas are also planned at the Dawei Special Economic
Zone. One that will produce 36MW will be completed by September 2014,
and another to produce 180MW by July 2015.
Dawei Deep Seaport and Special Economic
Zone Project are being co-developed in Taninthari region by Myanmar and
Thailand. Italian-Thai Company initiated this multi-billion dollar
project in 2008, but project implementation is still focusing at
infrastructural developments.
