The ministry earlier signed nationwide telecommunications licence agreements with two foreign telecom companies, Telenor and Ooredoo, on January 30 this year in Nay Pyi Taw.
After awarding licences for two foreign firms to operate communication services in Myanmar, a spokesperson said, the ministry was happy to award a licence to a local telecom operator such as Yatanarpon.
Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), under the Ministry of Communications and Information technology, was for a long time the sole operator of communications services. Now, the ministry allows those services to be run by both local and foreign telecom companies.
Ooredoo will employ Myanmar nationals at 90 percent, offer calling services at Ks 25 (US$ 0.025) per minute and launch its service with the 4G system. It will also provide aid for Myanmar’s social and educational sectors. Moreover, the Qatari firm has plans to manufacture and sell mobile handsets in Myanmar. It currently invites retailers to distribute their handsets.
Telenor will also provide 2G and 3G networks and use HSPA and LTE technologies to install mobile networks.
The two companies have temporarily assigned call charges of K 25 per minute and will sell SIM cards at K1,500 each. Norway’s Telenor and Qatar’s Ooredoo will not only start telecom services across the country but also create more job opportunities for locals.
Yatanarpon Teleport Company is now selling internet lines and pre-paid cards but is also investing in other businesses.
The four telecom companies (including MPT) to be operating communications services across the country will also participate in fair competitions.
