"Myanmar is embracing an open door policy," said Dirk Niebel. "The international donor community is supporting the country on its chosen path towards human rights and democracy. It is crucial for the donors to take a harmonised approach and to ensure their cooperation is integrated and in line with the government's needs."
During a previous visit to Myanmar in February 2012, Development Minister Niebel had already called for European Joint Programming in Myanmar. The European Commission has taken up this proposal and convened the donors for an initial high-level meeting.
In addition to attending the conference, Development Minister Dirk Niebel will hold high-level talks with the Government of Myanmar on progress made in the areas of democratisation and human rights. He will also visit German-Myanmar development cooperation projects that were launched after Germany resumed its development cooperation with Myanmar.
