The World Bank (WB) plans to assist the country with rural development in Myanmar, such as water supply, electricity, transportation and education sectors, it is reported.
“About 70 per cent of Myanmar population
lives in rural areas so we need to do the improvement of rural
habitant’s life. Especially good transportation, water supply and
electricity are important. If they have been provided, we can do another
step to promote education. Education is essential to the development of
the nation. That’s why WB wants to help basic infrastructures such as
educational growth and good transportation,” Axel van Trotsenburg, World
Bank’s Vice President of East Asia and Pacific Region said in a news
conference at World Bank office in Yangon on May 31.
At present, WB is supporting Myanmar
government in many sectors including arranging transportation for the
overseas trip of government representatives and helping government
officials to go field trips to WB programmes in addition to technical
aids. Similarly, WB and International Finance Corporation (IFC) work
together to assist government and private sectors development.
“Smart investments in infrastructure
including water supply, telecommunications and transportation can help
accelerate growth. Turing on the lights in Myanmar is also critical so
that children can study at night and doctors can refrigerate medicines.
The WB is helping in the short run with support for the cleaner and
greener gas turbines to generate much-needed electricity to reduce
blackouts and improve access for the 3 out of 4 people who have no
electricity,” the vice president said.
While producing much-needed electricity
across the country, the government needs to draw short and long term
plans. The WB is implementing a 120 mega watts project to produce
electricity in Mon State. For long term plan, the government and private
should work together to invest at electricity sector and need to give
first priority to generate energy in long term plan.
