An oil and gas drilling machine will be
constructed at the offshore site “M-11” in Myanmar in 2013, according to
Total E&P Co (Yangon).
“We have 40 per cent share in the M-11
project, and we are now planning to set up a drill. I think we can begin
after the rainy season of 2013 [November],” said Namita Shah, general
manager of Total E&P.
The project is a joint venture between
the Thai company PTTEP, French company Total E&P and Japanese
company JX NEOX (JX Myanmar), with them having 45 per cent, 40 per cent
and 15 per cent share respectively in the project.
Previously, PTTEP who is also the top
investor in Myanmar’s oil and gas industry, had been operating its
business solely in the M-11 project area. By 2011, PTTEP invited
investments from other companies.
Myanmar exports natural gas from the
Shwe Project to China and from the Yetagun project to Thailand. It also
has plans to export gas from the Zawtika project to Thailand in 2013.
But in line with its changing policy favouring local use of its natural
oil and gas, Myanmar will prioritise local consumption of the gas from
the M-11 project.
