MobiFone, Vietnam’s top mobile telecom
services company, opened its representative office in Myanmar on
November 24 in a bid to make a long-term investment in the country.
“Myanmar has opened its doors to foreign
investors, particularly in the telecommunication and information
industry,” said Ngyyen Dang Nguyen, deputy director of the company, on
the office opening day.
With the opening of a representative
office in the country, Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Company (VMS) is
showing commitment for strong and long-term investment in the Myanmar
telecom industry as well as to speed up business opportunities between
MobiFone and local telecom partners in many fields, he added.
VMS, founded in 1993, is a leading mobile operator in Vietnam.
Vietnam has about 40 million
VMS-MobiFone users and the company earned a profit of US$2 billion in
2012, according to news sources.
It was awarded the favourite mobile
operator in Vietnam for six consecutive years from 2005 to 2011. It was
also awarded the title of “Labour Hero in renovation period” by the
prime minister.
Vietnam’s total investments in Myanmar
in four projects hit US$41.796 million in July 2012, according to the
Myanmar government’s statistics.
Trade between Myanmar and Vietnam amounted to US$167 million in 2011 and it is expected to reach US$500 million by 2015.
