“We are hoping to start with ‘095’ followed by seven digits (altogether ten digits). We’ll try to cover half of the population, which is 30 million,” he said.
At first, Telenor Myanmar will make a priority of selling its SIM cards in big cities. It will then take five years to cover the entire nation. Once it begins selling its SIM cards, both 2G and 3G SIM cards will be available so that everyone in the country can access the internet.
“We will try our best for everyone in this country to access the internet by using our services,” Furberg said.
Telenor guarantees high-speed internet access, and service charges will vary per minute and per megabyte.
“We’ll try to ensure high-speed internet. For the moment we will use the current internet fibre optics, but we have planned to go our own way in the future,” Furberg added.
Telenor expects to have more than 100,000 stalls where its prepaid cards will be easily available.
Norway’s Telenor, one of the leading telecommunication firms, signed an agreement with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on Wednesday to operate its activities in Myanmar.
Ninety-one countries submitted expressions of interest to get the operator licence, which led to the most intense competition among telecom giants, according to a senior Telenor official.
