Myanmar’s mobile penetration rate expected to reach 80 percent by 2015-16

The number of mobile phone users in Myanmar is expected to reach up to 80 percent of the country’s population during the fiscal year 2015-16, according to Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology.

The number of internet users in the country is also expected to reach 50 percent by the same year, it said.

“We are working to boost our telecoms service in the country. The government is working together with local and foreign companies to meet that goal in the year 2015-16, which is the last year of the project,” said a ministry official.

The country’s mobile phone penetration rate reached 10 percent of the population in 2012-13, and 27 percent in 2013-14. It is expected to reach 50 percent in 2014-15 and continue to rise to 80 percent in that year, according to official data.

Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) said it would sell a total of 14 million mobile phones by the year 2015-16, year by year according to an official plan. MPT said it would sell four million in the year 2013-14, and five million each in the years 2014-15 and 2015-16.
