The new programme was announced on the first day of a women’s development workshop held at the Sky Stars Hotel on Tuesday.
“They [women in refugee camps] have no money because they are jobless. The numbers of women who are being trafficked to China have increased in Kachin State due to the lack of earnings. In Rakhine State, the women are suffering from nutrition shortages and health difficulties because of the low income problem,” said May Sabai Phyu from the Gender Equality Network.
“They may be suffering depression due to their current situation. That’s why we are going to conduct the vocational training courses, to help them prevent such problems.”
The workshop on women’s development was attended by officials from the U.N., the Women’s Humanitarian Commissioner for Refugees, and civic organizations from Kachin and Rakhine states.
The workshop runs through today.
