Myanmar receives largest aids from Japan and US

The largest portion of international aids which Myanmar has received since Thein Sein's government took office in 2011 came from Japan and the United States, according to a report from Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.

The combined aid funds from the two countries amounted to over US$460 million, said the report.

Since the new civilian government took office in Myanmar on April 1, 2011, Japan has provided Myanmar with the largest amount of aids. It gave US$291.24 million for agricultural and rural development, disaster management and socio-economic development projects in Myanmar.

The U.S. gave the second largest amount of aids with a total of US$170 million for Myanmar's health and education, democracy and governance, and media development.

The other countries also helped Myanmar. The United Kingdom gave £87 million in aid. China gave Yuan 241.15 million plus US$1.02 million; South Korea US$11.35 million; India US$33.44 million; Australia US$60.1 million; the European Union US$41.97 million. Germany also gave US$46.82 million for rural infrastructural development tasks in Myanmar, according to the report.

The government is striving for the efficient use of international aid for the people-centre development tasks, while monitoring the effectiveness produced from the use of these funds, the ministry said in the report.
