High price of cancer-fighting medication forces patients to use India-made medicine

As the majority of cancer-curing medications are expensive, most patients are relying on medicine imported from India, cancer specialist Dr. Soe Aung told a health forum on eliminating cancer through education.

“On the patients’ side, they ask for the best medicine. One brand-name medicine was imported from India by three or four companies. Here in Myanmar, we have to use all the imported medicines. We don’t know for sure which medicine is the best,” said Dr. Soe Aung.

He added that the Myanmar Food and Drug Control Department needs to check the quality of food and medicine imported.

Moreover, storefront medicine shops opening on township streets should be subjected to occasional surprise checks.

By using certain cancer medicines, patients can destroy some cancer cells. As more remedies for cancer treatment have emerged, many cancers can at least be managed if not completely cured.

Myanmar imported more than US$ 150 million (Ks 145.79 billion) worth of medicine in the 2009-2010 financial year. For the 2012-13 financial year, that figure has increased to more than US$ 244 million.
