Air KBZ has cancelled its flights to the Tanintharyi Region capital after the windshield of one of its planes cracked while the aircraft was docked at Dawei Airport on Monday afternoon.
An airport official confirmed that pebbles cracked the windshield of the ATR 72-500 aircraft as a Myanmar Airways plane was taking off from the airport.
“When the Embraer 190 aircraft [of Myanmar Airways] increased its engine power, the pebbles hit the [Air KBZ's] aircraft,” said Hla Soe, officer in charge of Dawei Airport’s civil aviation department.
“This accident happened because the Embraer 190’s thrust was strong. No one was injured.”
Because of the cracked windshield, AIR KBZ passengers scheduled to fly on that plane had to wait until the evening to fly to Yangon on a private flight.
“One of the panels has been cracked badly. There is also some damage on other panels. No passengers were hurt. Engineers from Yangon will fly here with a private aircraft and replace the windshield,” said the manager of Air KBZ’s Dawei branch office.
Air KBZ currently has six aircraft: two ATR 72-600s and four ATR 72-500s. The airline plans to buy two more planes before the peak season next year.
