Japan to help upgrade commuter train system in Yangon

Japan is cooperating with Myanmar Railways to increase the number of commuters using the circular city rail system in Yangon and help ease the traffic congestion.

"Japanese analysts estimate that over 100,000 commuters are using circular trains in Yangon. That amount is only 3 or 4 percent of overall commuters. They presume that Japan can implement the train system for 3 million commuters,” said Kyaw Kyaw Myo, General Manager of Myanmar RailwayMyanmar Railways is currently upgrading its services to increase the speed of Yangon circular trains. According to an agreement signed before 2013, they plan to expand the diameter of the railroad and extend the Yangon circular railway.

Japan will build the railroad connecting the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, in addition to helping upgrade Yangon's circular railway plan, according to Win Naung from the Ministry of Railways.

Japan will provide a low interest loan for Yangon circular railway and upcoming railroad plans. Yangon has 21 circular trains daily that circulate from the central railway station to outlying townships.
