Authorities will upgrade Yangon's circular railway service and operate air-conditioned carriages in the near future to help solve traffic jams, according to the Minister of Rail Transportation.
Than Htay told the press on Saturday
that the government plans to upgrade the railway in Yangon and offer
better services for its six million inhabitants.
“The traffic is getting worse on the
roads, so we want to upgrade the railway service in Yangon. We have also
been trying to improve the scenery by collecting garbage thrown by
people along the routes. Many people have become interested in the
railway since we began fixing the existing seats, providing water, and
renovating the interiors," said Than Htay.
The minister added that improvements are
still needed in terms of increasing the number of carriages and
ensuring that the trains run on time. He said the ministry would expand
the service by importing air-conditioned carriages similar to the ones
running between Yangon and Kyaikhto.
The minister added that only five of the
35 routes are economical for Myanmar Railways, and that the rest of the
routes do not make a profit.
