With a scheduled flight on October 28, Air Asia is set to become the first international airline to land at Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, sources say.
The low-cost carrier will begin
thrice-weekly Bangkok-Nay Pyi Taw flights (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)
from October 28 to November 15. After November 15, the route will
switch to daily flights.
The ticket cost will be US$50 per passenger, including airport tax and other fees.
“We mainly intended the flight for the
SEA Games in Myanmar,” said Air Asia CEO Aireen Omar. “We will use the
new A320 airbus for these flights.”
Air Asia currently provides
Yangon-Bangkok flight service three times a week, with daily flights for
Bangkok-Mandalay and Yangon-Kuala Lumpur routes.
Nay Pyi Taw International Airport was
constructed through a buyer credit loan agreement between the Myanmar
government and the Export Import Bank of China. Excluding the runway,
the airport buildings are valued at more than US$235 million.
Pioneer Aerodrome is responsible for ground services.
Since it began operations on December
19, 2011, use of Nay Pyi Taw airport has been divided between charter
flights and those reserved for guests of the government. The airport was
cleared for international use on April 1 of this year.
