Myanmar’s Ministry of Energy is planning to conduct an environmental impact assessment and social impact assessment for a new oil refinery plant that will process crude oil from Myanmar-China oil pipeline.
The plant is to be built in Minhla
Township of Magway region near Oil Chemical Factory and the government
is inviting tenders to carry out the assessments.
The plant aims to process nearly 45,000
barrels of crude oil from oil pipeline and the fuel produced from the
refinery plants will be used for Myanmar’s transport sector.
The Ministry of Energy has signed a
production sharing contract with South Korea's Daewoo International
Cooperation to explore off shore oil and natural gas in Block A-1 and
Block A-3 in the Rakhine region.
Gas and oil found from these blocks will
be used for the Myanmar-China gas pipeline project, which is a joint
venture between China's National Petroleum Corporation and the
state-owned Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise, with the former holding 50.9
percent stake in the project.
However, Myanmar will only receive just
over US$6 million annually for the right of passage plus an oil transit
fee of US$1 per tonne of export crude, which aims to reach 22 million
tonnes a year, according to Ministry of Energy.
