Border trade is booming according to Myanmar's Commerce and Consumers Affairs Department, with exports exceeding imports and total trade value this year estimated at US$760 million by mid-July.
Myanmar exports farm and animal
products, fishery products, minerals, timber and electronics in exchange
for industrial machinery, raw materials and consumer goods through
numerous busy trading centres on its borders. Total exports amounted to
US$385 million exceeding imports which reached US$373 million by mid
July.
Myanmar has made over US$274 million
from exporting farm products, over US$55 million from fishery products,
over US$13 million in minerals, US$3 million from timber and US$23
million from other products.
Muse town on the Myanmar/China border is
the busiest trading centre with total trade amount valued at US$500
million. Myawady trade centre on the Myanmar/Thai border is the second
largest with trade estimated at US$70 million.
