Since Myanmar government allowed vehicle import from foreign countries in October 2011 after lifting decades-old ban, , more than 153,000 units have been imported, according to Custom Department statistic.
During this one and half year time,
total revenue of customs duty and commercial tax from vehicle import
reached nearly 500 billion kyats (US$560million), Customs Department’s
reports said.
Majority of imported vehicles are
personal cars accounting for about 90 percent of the total at 139,403
units, while the rest 10 percent is 15,752 trucks.
However, only a small fraction of total imported vehicles were buses with 2,343 units imported up to April 6.
There were public criticisms against
importing few buses and trucks but a large number of personal cars,
which allegedly worsened traffic congestion and public transportation.
Total customs duty from those imported cars hit 239 billion kyats and commercial tax did 246 billion kyats.
Moreover, there are large registration
fees on each imported vehicle collected by the Department of Road
Transport Administration, car dealers said.
They estimate that it will gain around
US$400 to 500 million from vehicle registration fees. They cited the
announcement from the Ministry of Rail Transportation stating the
Department of Road Transport Administration received US$97.35 million
for 27,971 cars imported between October 2011 and last 14th June.
