Suzuki gets approval for assembly plant in Thilawa Special Economic Zone

The Myanmar Investment Commission has approved a vehicle production permit for Japan-based Suzuki’s Myanmar unit, according to the Directorate of Investment and Companies.

Suzuki (Myanmar) Motor Co. Ltd. has received permission to produce vehicles and spare parts, officials said. They said Suzuki was expected to invest several billion yen in an assembly plant, which is tentatively scheduled for completion by 2015.

Suzuki (Myanmar) started here in 1998 by selling motor bikes and cars. It has a plant in the Industrial Zone (South Dagon) as well as show rooms.

Its new plant will be located in Thilawa Special Economic Zone.

Officials said vehicle makers were rushing into Myanmar and that they were being joined by heavy-machinery manufacturers.

Commerce Minister U Win Myint said numerous foreign car makers also wanted to export new models to Myanmar.
