Taipei, Feb. 19 (CNA) The Ministry
of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that it will continue to help small and
medium-sized businesses to tap into emerging markets, with Myanmar and
Brunei two of the priority countries this year.
Stephen Tai,
deputy director-general of the ministry's Department of International
Cooperation and Economic Affairs, said Myanmar has rich resources that
have attracted the attention of the international community.
Wang
Chung-yu, chairman of the Taipei-based Chinese International Economic
Cooperation Association, led a group to Myanmar last month and signed a
cooperation pact with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), which should be helpful to tap business
opportunities there, Tai said.
The association will invite food processing and medical device suppliers to visit the country, he noted.
He
also said that it will continue to visit emerging markets that offer
good potential, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Papua New Guinea,
Brunei, Lithuania, Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
Tai
said the ministry assisted small and medium-sized businesses to tap
business opportunities worth over US$180 million in diplomatic allies
and emerging economies last year.
This year, he said, it will
continue to commission the Taiwan External Trade Development Council to
take part in trade fairs in 24 countries.
