Local and foreign investors are
being invited to operate salt-water prawn farms and breeding sites in a
more than 2,000 hectare zone Yangon’s Kyaungtang township, officials
said.
Prawn farms and breeding sites in the
zone were suspended more than one year ago due to their lack of success
and new investment is being sought from experienced prawn farmers, the
officials said.
One high ranking official from the
Fisheries Department said the prawn breeding and farm zone would be made
more professional. Officials from the regional government as well as
the Fisheries Department were working together to re-launch the zone, he
said.
Crab, including soft shell crab, is also
being farmed in the township. Prawn is raised primarily for the
domestic market with only a small amount exported.
