The Thanlyin refinery plans to import crude oil and produce value-added products, according to the ministry of energy.
Officials of the state-owned Myanma
Petrochemical Enterprise (MPE) held a meeting with foreign investors on
December 2 in Nay Pyi Taw where they discussed about a joint venture
involving the No. 1 Thanlyin Refinery.
The MPE is planning to upgrade the
refinery so that it can produce value-added products to meet local
demands without having negative impacts on energy security and the
environment.
The Thanlyin oil refinery has three
plants with the capacity to handle 14,000 barrels, 6,000 barrels and
5,200 barrels of oil per day besides a tar plant, a wax plant and two
power plants.
power plants.
Myanmar has three oil refineries –
Thanlyin, Chauk and Thanpayarkan. The refineries used to generate 51,000
barrels of oil each day at the beginning. But now the production has
decreased to almost one third – 7,500 barrels of crude oil and 11,000
barrels of condensate a day.
The ministry expects 7.15 million barrels of crude oil will be generated across the country in the 2012-13 fiscal year.
