SEA Games stadiums, gymnasiums, villages to be used for sports university after event

Sports stadiums, gymnasiums, and villages developed for the 27th Southeast Asian Games will be used to create a new sports university once the SEA Games over, according to Sports Minister Tint Hsan.

The minister made the remarks during Wednesday’s parliamentary session, in response to a question by Lower House MP Thura Aye Myint. The MP asked how the government plans to use the facilities in Nay Pyi Taw in the future, and whether it has any plans to hold a national sports festival or students’ sports festival.

Tint Hsan said the Ministry would implement the sports university project after receiving permission from the central government to use SEA Games stadiums and gymnasiums. In the first stage, the Ministry will open sports academies and training schools using the existing facilities.
According to the Minister, the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex in Nay Pyi Taw will be used to host international sports competitions and local sports festivals, conduct research, and train selected athletes.

He said that the Ministry would cooperate with other ministries to re-host the National Sports Festival four times a year. Previously, Myanmar held the National Sports Festival in 1992, 1994, and 1997.

He added that the Ministry would also cooperate with other ministries to hold student sports festivals for each level in accordance with instructions from administrative committees, working committees and subcommittees.
