Thibaw, a newly attractive place for tourists

Thibaw is a city located in northern Shan State. Lately, it has become a major attraction for foreign visitors.

Over a hundred foreign visitors come to Thibaw every day, according to the hotel businessmen in Thibaw.

“More foreigners visit this year than previous. Ten years ago, they were not allowed to visit the other side of the Gote-htaik Bridge. Now the visitor number is getting over a hundred here,” said Moe Hnin Yu, an owner of Myat Yadana Hotel.

Most visited pagodas are Bawkyo Mu Htaw Pagoda and Maha Myat Muni Pagoda. Thibaw Palace, Nant-tote waterfall situated in western part of Thibaw, and the confluence area close to Chaungsone bridge, which confluence area is said to be sold to a foreign company, are also must visit.

The whole Thibaw city can be viewed from the mountains of Koesutaung, Ngarsutaung and Thonesutaung located in the historic religious area of Theintaung.

Thibaw was built by a Shan Saw Bwarr (Shan chieftain) named Sao Hkun Saing in 1888, referencing to the Mandalay Yadanapon city.

Thibaw had been ruled by Shan chieftains until 1962 when General Ne Win arrested the last Shan chieftain Sao Kya Seng.
