US$1.8 billion required for clearing sandbanks in Ayeyawady River- Mandalay transport minister

Calculations indicate it will cost about US$1.8 billion to clear the sandbanks along the Ayeyawady River between Mandalay and Sagaing Regions, said Mr. Kyaw San, Transport Minister of the Mandalay Region.

The issue was first raised by MP Tin Oo who asked about the maintenance work along the course of Ayeyawady River at the regional parliament’s session on September 25.

It is such a big project to clear sandbanks along the Ayeyawady River in west of Mandalay city that US$1.8 million is needed to dig all the sand and make a water channel of 50 kilometres long, 1 kilometres wide and 4 metres deep along the river course between Mandalay and Sagaing Regions, Mr. Kyaw San said.

This costly project should be implemented by the central government’s arrangement and it is required to get foreign assistance to fund it, he added.

Ayeyawady River stretches 288 miles over Mandalay Region (from Innet Village, Tagaung Township to Sintku village, Nyaung Oo district).

Mr. Kyaw San, however, admitted the whole river is fully filled with water and there is no sandbank along the Ayeyawady River in the rainy season [from June to October].

In the hot season [from March to May], sandbanks occupy 18 km2 on Ayeyawady River_ i.e. 45 percent of the river’s total surface area that covers 40 km2 in total between Mandalay and Sagaing Regions. Water still covers 55 percent [i.e. 22km2] of the river during the hot season.
