Shwetaung Company is carrying out environmental impact
assessment on Saidin hydropower project in Buthidaung Township in
Rakhine State, sources said.
The project has had no progress and was suspended since last year due to shortage in government funds, they said.
Although
a local company started construction of the road for the project in
2008, it was later suspended because the government planned to build the
project together with a Chinese company.
The design for the project
is now being drawn. It can take the project five to eight years to
complete. The EIA report is now being written by the company concerned.
Saidin
project was signed MoU by Ministry of Electric Power No-1 and Anargat
Swanar Company Limited in November 2009. It was expected to generate 70
MW of electricity for Rakhine upon completion.
The project is located 10 miles east of Buthidaung in Rakhine State.
