The Ministry of Hotels and
Tourism has told companies with hotels and serviced apartments under
construction in Yangon to finish them before the end of this year to
help offset the shortage of rooms for tourists, ministry director Hlaing
Oo said.
“The ministry urged the companies to
finish before the end of this year because tourist arrivals are
increasing every year,” he said.
These include both foreign-invested
projects like the Shangri La Hotel, Rose Garden and Centre Point, and
locally owned ones like the Nawarat Concorde Hotel, Hlaing Oo said.
The four projects will add about 1,000 rooms for tourists in Yangon.
Construction of new hotels was halted on numerous occasions due to ministry’s rules and regulations, but in 2011 the ministry eased controls to cope with the shortage of rooms.

Tourist’s arrivals last year hit record
highs, with demand for rooms outstripping supply in Yangon, Mandalay,
Bagan and Inle regions.
