Myanmar suspends rice export amidst price fall

Myanmar has temporarily suspended export of more than 60,000 tonnes of rice as international and local prices have gone down. This has brought about difficulties to farmers, sources said.

The move came after a long holiday in Africa resulting in the suspension of shipping operations during that period. Operations are set to resume end-January.

Myanmar will resume exports only at the end of this month. The rice is stocked with merchants. Businessmen said the government needs to step in and buy the rice from the farmers.
