During her visit, the EITI chairperson will meet with governmental organizations, civil society groups and mining companies to discuss EITI projects.
The EITI Standard is an international standard for ensuring transparency around the use of countries’ oil, gas and mineral resources. Moreover, it provides requirements and guidance on how to report activities in the oil, gas and mining sectors and ensure that this information is available to the public.
The Standard also covers areas such as licence transparency, transit and state oil sales.
“It is a great pleasure for our country because she [Short] will come here and discuss the EITI’s procedures. The international community is bound to pay more attention to Myanmar after a visit by the EITI chairperson,” said Min Zarni Lin, second leader of the EITI’s office in Myanmar.
Clare Short became chairperson of the EITI in 2011. She previously served as a UK Secretary of State for International Development.
Critics note that Myanmar has been unable to apply for membership with the EITI until December of this year. Certain steps must be undertaken before applying to the international EITI Board for EITI candidacy.
Myanmar still cannot form a coalition group dedicated to reporting on the government’s actions, developing a work plan and establishing a multi-stakeholder group together with companies and civil society.
