Shein Thu Aung, a member of the Yadanabon Teleport Company’s board of directors, told Mizzima on 5 November that the company has opened discussions with international telecom organizations. It aims to establish cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with several overseas firms.
“We are currently holding talks with approximately twenty foreign telecommunications companies but have not yet chosen business partners,” Shein Thu Aung said.
At last year’s Myanmar Global Investment Forum, Yadanabon Teleport’s chief executive officer Tin Win remarked that local telecom operators were facing many challenges from foreign competitors. However, instead of engaging in competition, Yadanabon Teleport is now embracing cooperation.
Shein Thu Aung added that partnering with foreign companies will require a major reassessment of services, equipment, and technologies.
“A swift and comprehensive overhaul of products and services will be needed,” he said. “There is already a plan in place that will guide Myanmar’s telecom industry to complete modernization by 2016.”
Two foreign companies, Telenor and Ooredoo, along with domestic outlets Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications and Yadanabon Teleport, currently provide telecom services throughout Myanmar.
