Six new hotels to be built in Yangon

Six new hotels will be constructed in Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial hub, in the near future, according to Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).

The YCDC has granted permission for construction projects which comprise up to 28 buildings of 8 storeys or above, including six hotels.

Among them, the highest will be 32 storeys and the lowest 12 storeys, YCDC said. The new hotels will be constructed in Yangon’s Mayangon, Yankin, South Okkalapa, Lamadaw, Tamwe and Bahan townships.

Demand for hotel rooms is on the rise as more foreign tourists visit the country. Yangon Regional Government announced in September that it has received several applications for permission to open new hotels in time for the 27th Southeast Asian Games to hosted in Myanmar in December.

Some tourists planning to visit the country have either cancelled or postponed their plans due to recent bombings in Yangon, leaving one American woman injured.

Ministry of Hotels and Tourism later issued a directive for local hotels to beef up security.
