Digital projection and sound systems have been installed in 17 cinemas across the country, but the majority of movie houses are still awaiting the digital upgrade.
“We are planning to install digital systems in every cinema in Myanmar, including state-owned and private cinemas,” said an official from Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprises. “So far, 17 cinemas have been upgraded with digital systems. Other cinemas have also submitted proposals for the upgrade. Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprises will try to help in the needed areas.”
Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprises will help entrepreneurs secure loans, as significant investment is required to install digital systems. The organization also plans to give loans to film producers who want to make films with the digital system, the official said.
“We all must change to the digital system. In other countries, the film system is going to disappear so everyone is using digital systems. It’s time for Myanmar films and cinemas to change,” said film director Maung Myo Min.
According to last year’s statistics from the Myanmar Motion Picture Organisation, Myanmar had a total of 65 cinemas, but some of them have since been torn down and rebuilt as shopping malls or condominiums with mini-theatres.
