The parliament urged the electric power ministry to review the measure and re-submit to the parliament its response.
Without keeping subscribers informed and clarified ahead of the move, the Yangon City Electricity Supply Board announced on Oct. 29 to raise nearly two times the electricity charge prices starting immediately from the month of November.
According to the announcement, electricity bill fee for public household on consumption of power from above 100 units will be raised to 50 kyats (5 US cents) per unit from previously 35 kyats, while that for public industry, enterprises and lump sum on consumption of above 5,000 units will be raised to 150 kyats per unit from 100 kyats per unit.
Normally, public households consume power of between 100 and 300 units, surveys show, and the fee hike brings impact to ordinary people.
The charge prices for government departments will be 50 kyats per unit for office use, while that for state industrial use will be 100 kyats per unit.
The raise of the electricity bill fee has sparked two-day demonstration in Yangon. Demonstrators holding candle light threatened that if the electricity fee is not reduced, they will keep taking to street for protests.
The existing prices, which are two times of that in 2006, have been in application since January 2012.
According to 2012 statistics, electricity consumption in Myanmar reached about 1,555 megawatt (mw), of which Yangon consumed about 667 mw as many business and industrial enterprises are based in the city.
Of the total consumption of electricity in Yangon region, public consumption takes up 294.55 mw, industrial and business enterprises 123.36 mw and hospitals, government departments and high schools 109.27 mw.
