MP calls on govt to open its fund for Yangon poor

MP Nyo Nyo Thinn has called on the government to give financial support to elderly people, pregnant women and poor students from the Ks1- billion fund provided to the Yangon Region.

Dr Nyo Nyo Thinn is the representative of Bahan township in the Yangon Region and one of six women in the 123-member Parliament. On Friday, she urged the government to implement programmes to support the disadvantaged.

"If we look at the budget of the Yangon Regional government, how much has it been used for public health and education?” she asked.

“Shouldn't they implement programmes to support elderly people and provide free medicines to pregnant women and nutritious food to poor students at poor schools as a special project, using the Ks1-billion fund they receive from the central government?" Dr Nyo Nyo Thinn said.

"A succession of Myanmar governments has given more priority to infrastructure development rather than investing in the country's future. They have built bridges and cities. Aren't they going to make investments and projects for the future of the 6-million people living in Yangon?”

Dr Nyo Nyo Thinn said if this action was not taken, the education level would continue to degrade. The health sector would remain in the last place in Asean," she added.

During the first Yangon Regional Parliamentary session held in September, MP Nyo Nyo Thinn submitted a proposal for the government to implement nutrition programmes for students in monastic and poor elementary schools. But the responsible ministry did not agree to her proposal and it was rejected.
