The IMC will hold a business meet titled "India Calling" at Yangon in Myanmar from 24 to 26 November. The aim is to help Indian industrialists to explore business opportunities, forge economic and commercial links, joint ventures and technological cooperation. More than 50 Indian business houses are expected to attend the meet.
India's total trade with Myanmar touched $1.95 billion in 2012-13, an encouraging and steady increase from $12.4 million in 1980-81. The bulk of the trade comprises exports from India as it actively works in Myanmar's infrastructure development, such as setting up energy plants, rail network, schools and industrial training institutions. Indians see business in Myanmar's pharmaceuticals, meat preparations, sugar and sugar confectionery industry, base metal articles, animal fodder, tools and implements.
"Myanmar has emerged from a long period of isolation with much hope and support from regional and global communities," IMC president Shailesh Vaidya said. "Both India and Myanmar have complementary strengths in a wide range of key areas, which the Indian business community hopes to capitalise on. That is why Myanmar is a hot investment destination for Indian businessmen and industrialists."
