Government commits US$80 million for Rakhine rebuilding projects

NAY PYI TAW—The government will spend US$ 80 million (Ks 77.83 billion) in small- and medium-sized enterprise funding as part of its economic recovery plan for Rakhine State, according to Director Than Htut Swe of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The funds dedicated to the project will come from the existing national budget, he added. The SMEs will be aimed at providing assistance to those who work in the fishing industry.

The respective committees for the Rakhine State recovery plan had submitted proposals for the project to the Central Committee for Rakhine State Peace, Tranquility and Development Implementation.

However, other rehabilitation funds are needed for such areas as education and health, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The Central Committee for Rakhine State Tranquility and Development Implementation said that Rakhine State needs about US$ 109.3 million to implement the SMEs project.
