Committed announces seizure of illegally imported foodstuffs

The Central Committee of Illegal Trade Control has submitted a case of illicitly imported foodstuffs seized from Quarto Products to the respective ministries, director Thein Tun Oo of the central committee said yesterday.

The company illegally imported 93 kinds of wine, soft drinks, beer and food products value of about 65 million Ks (Bt2.1 million), the director said at a press conference to announce the seizure.

The central committee received a complaint on October 2 that Quarto Products was importing illegal products such as beer and frozen meat. Quarto Products was put under surveillance for 24 hours before the central committee carried out its search on October 28 and found a tip-off they had received to be true, a source at the committee said.

Quarto Products’ managing director has been charged under Myanmar’s export- import law and customs law.

“The company has imported beer and wine for two hotels as their representative and we have informed the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism about whether the imported products are in accordance with the rules and regulations. Our investigations also discovered that three foreigners, including a Cambodian and a Singaporean, are associated with the company to import restricted products. We are making inquiries at the Ministry of Commerce about it,” he said.
