Bank notes to be issued with prominent leaders’ pictures _Central Bank

Bank notes bearing appropriate images—including those of prominent leaders—will be issued in future printings with the approval of the government, according to the vice-governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar.

Khin Saw Oo replied to a proposal raised at the Lower House by MP Thein Nyunt (Thingangyun), who urged the Union government to circulate bank notes bearing a picture of General Aung San, as was done in the past. Previous governments issued bank notes bearing the picture of the iconic national leader. At present, however, bank notes from the smallest note to Ks 1,000 note bear the image of a lion, rather than that of Aung San.

Thein Nyunt told that since the lion was similar to the emblem of a political party, it should not used for the national-level bank notes. Therefore, he urged the Union government to substitute the picture of bank notes with that of General Aung San.

In response to Thein Nyunt’s proposal, Khin Saw Oo replied that the Central Bank of Myanmar had issued bank notes bearing the image of lion since 1952. It did not intentionally issue bank notes with the same image used by the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, which was formed in May 2010.

She said the Central Bank would issue paper money bearing pictures of the country’s prominent leaders, buildings, landscapes, and emblems in future printings with the approval of the government.

“According to Section 62 in Chapter 9 of Myanmar’s Central Bank Law, prescribed on July 31 this year, the Central Bank must seek approval from the government when it has a plan to circulate bank notes,” she said.
