ODA loans are Japanese tax payers' money - JICA Chairman

The Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Myanmar comes from Japanese tax payers according to Akihiko Tanaka, Chairman of the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).

"JICA is now providing technical aid, ODA loans and free-interest loans to Myanmar but also other foreign countries. The congress collects the tax from Japanese people and shared the budget to the JICA. While using the money, we must present the reports to the congress as the tax to be used in important places with good reasons," said Akihiko Tanaka.

The JICA will provide over US$ 900 million in ODA loans to Myanmar this year to help alleviate poverty in ethnic areas, develop skills and expertise and basic infrastructures development.

The JICA’s president visited Myanmar on October 5 and attended the signing ceremony of the Technical Cooperation Project. The US$ 13.5 million project was organised between Yangon and Mandalay Technological Universities, the Ministry of Science and Technology and JICA.

JICA is opening branch offices in Asia, the Middle-East, Africa, North America and the European countries.
