Myanmar to implement power-generating project with Japanese loans

Myanmar will carry out an electricity-generating project with an official development assistance loan from Japan, after building low head dams at four water routes on the Ayeyawady River, according to Union Minister for Transport Nyan Tun Aung.

The Department of Water Resources and Rivers Development is planning to build 16 low head dams along the Ayeyawady River in Kachin State and in Sagaing, Magway, Bago and Ayeyawady regions.

The Department has signed an agreement with the SBE NV Engineering Company from Belgium to survey feasibility assessments for four water routes. The two parties carried out feasibility surveys of four water routes in central Myanmar over seven months beginning in March this year.

“We didn’t aim to build the dams only to sell power. We want to carry out a special project at the national level for arid zone development,” said Nyan Tun Aung.

The Department is planning to invite tenders for the remaining low head dams to local and foreign firms as a build-operate-transfer system.
