Myanmar Making Great Strides In Sweeping Reform Process

YANGON, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Myanmar has made great strides in its reform process, assigning 23 deputy ministers to lead 26 newly-formed cabinet sub-committees to coordinate tasks to be accomplished in every sector on the ground.

The cabinet sub-committees or delievery units were formed under cabinet committees led by the vice president and ministers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Coordination tasks will be carried out between various ministries and state or region governments on matters of political, economic, private sector development and administrative reform.

The move was a follow-up of the formation of a national reform steering committee led by President U Thein Sein in August to direct efforts on reform programme for his remaining 30 months of five-year term of office.

Thein Sein told the assigned committees that the government aims to meet two goals -- peace and stability and rule of law, and socio-economic development which has lagged behind in development in all aspects.

In the political reform process, the government is trying hard to ensure political stability, the emergence of all-inclusive political process and putting an end to more than six-decade of armed conflicts.

In the economic reform process, priority is being given to rural region development and poverty alleviation. The government has called for local and foreign investment to acquire capital and technology necessary for revitalisation of the economy through development of industry and small and medium enterprises.

In the administrative reform process, emphasis is being placed on implementation of people-centered administrative system.

In the first 30 months of Thein Sein's government, the president said that despite achieving some success there were failure in others as burgeoning of democratic practice is still weak.

Thein Sein called for continued implementation of tasks in his remaining term in office by taking lessons from past strengths and weaknesses.

The president took office on March 30, 2011 after a general election in November 2010.
