The Myanmar Port Authority says it will negotiate payouts for residents displaced by lands to be extended for Thilawa Port—unless no agreement is reached, in which case the MPA will comply with a court order.
The MPA has already arranged to provide payouts for local residents on land plots 25, 26 and 30. But it has yet to reach an agreement with those residents on the amount of the payouts.
“This is not intended as compensation,” said Cho Than Maung, managing director of the MPA.
“Compassionate grants will be offered to local people who are going to move from the extended farmlands. All the farmlands were registered under Land Nationalization Act 39. We are trying to reach an agreement with the local people. If not, we will go to court.”
There were 37 land plots extended in Thilawa for the purpose of constructing jetties, each land plot measuring 37.06 acres. In accordance with the Land Nationalization Act 39, the government has already permitted the MPA to use these farmlands for the construction of Thilawa Port.
The MPA has already received an official development assistance grant worth US$ 25 million (Ks 24.32 billion) from Japan for the Thilawa Port extension project. The MPA is due to start port construction tasks in early 2014.
