The first-ever Taiwan-Myanmar Joint Business Council Meeting will be held next month in the Southeast Asian country's capital to build closer bilateral economic ties, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) official said yesterday.
Lai Chien-chung (賴建中), director-general of MOFA's Department of Economic and Trade Affairs, said during a news briefing yesterday that the historic meeting will be held on Nov. 4 in Yangon.
The meeting is expected to enhance stronger bilateral business and economic cooperation in the days to come, Lai said. Myanmar has a wealth of natural resources that have attracted the attention of the international community, he said.
The Taiwanese delegation to the meeting will be headed by the Taipei-based Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association (CIECA), he said.
Taiwanese business representatives from the steel, cement and health industries are scheduled to join the delegation to explore business opportunities with the country, he added.
The business meeting was made possible by CIECA Chairman Wang Chung-yu's previous visit to Myanmar earlier this year, Lai said.
