Construction of Yangon flyovers reaches final state

Construction of the Bayintnaung and the Shwegondine flyovers is nearly complete, Yangon City Development Council (YCDC) sources say.

The YCDC’s original plan was to construct flyovers in most traffic jam areas in Yangon, including Hledan, Shwegondine, Bayintnaung and Tamway junction. The Hledan flyover is already finished, while the Bayintnaung and Shwegondine flyovers are still under construction. After consulting the survey plan, however, the YCDC decided not to proceed with the Tamway junction flyover.

“Both flyovers are about 90 percent complete. They will be finished this year,” an official from YCDC said.

The Hledan flyover was constructed by the Shwe Taung Development Company and has been in use since April 10. Although the flyover is finished, traffic is still heavy starting from a nearby bus stop located in Kamayut Township.

Traffic jams are worse near the construction sites of the Bayintnaung and Shwegondine flyovers, and precious time is wasted in heavy traffic, drivers say. Capital Development says the Shwegondine project will be finished in the third week of November. At present, the authorities are blocking buses and larger vehicles from passing through the Shwegondine traffic light, so as not to interfere with the construction sites for the Shwegondine flyover. Drivers are encouraged to use detour roads to avoid the sites.

The FMI Company is aiming to complete the Bayintnaung overpass in December and is currently working on the finishing touches.
