Overseas Myanmar workers ‘a priority’ for foreign companies

Due to a glut in unskilled labour in the local Myanmar market, employment agencies say that foreign companies prefer to hire overseas Myanmar workers.

At the moment, there are vacancies in communication, logistics, information technology (IT), food products and services, and human resources. These sectors need skilled workers, but the local employment market is filled with unskilled labourers, agencies say.

Because so few local Myanmar workers are skilled in the above fields and in foreign languages, employment agencies are looking further afield by holding job fairs in countries where most Myanmar migrant workers live, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“More than 300 people applied for work at a recent job fair held in Singapore. Right now, our company receives about 15 application forms daily. Some companies have about 800 applications on file at one time,” said Pyae Sone Min, online marketing executive for Career Development Consultants Co. Ltd.

“Some Myanmar people want to come back and work here if they can receive a salary that’s acceptable to them,” he added.

IT experts are the most in demand, with several vacancies available.

Telenor Telecommunication Company is also recruiting overseas Myanmar workers.

“The salary must be satisfactory if we want to attract local as well as overseas Myanmar people. A salary in local currency may be more appropriate I think,” Telenor Myanmar’s human resources officer said.
