Fisheries Department teams up with Singaporean firm to breed seawater prawns

The Fisheries Department is planning on a joint venture with Singaporean Gold Coin Company to breed seawater white prawns (also known as “Vennami,” a Thai import) at a breeding camp in Chaungtha Beach, Ayeyawady Region, according to a Fisheries Department source.

The source came from the department’s Fundamentals of Instrumentation and Quality Control-FIQC Section.

While breeding baby prawns, the Gold Coin Company will provide related breeding aids such as medicine, food, and various techniques.  The company will give the baby prawns to Fisheries Department as a product share.

“The company will have to gain 60 percent profit and we [the department] get the remaining 40 percent profit,” said Tun Win, Deputy-Director General of Myanmar Fisheries Department.

“For example, if the company gets 10 little prawns, we have to gain four. Moreover, the company will have to pay rental fees and other construction costs. We will carry out breeding measures together with other companies who want to invest in breeding of Vennami prawns.”

The Fisheries Department is now carrying out the breeding of seawater baby prawns—Vennami that are less disease-prone than saltwater tiger prawns. Currently, Myanmar is importing Vennami from Thailand and aiming to produce those on a commercial scale by itself.

“We imported those Vennami from Thailand.  But, Thailand didn’t share the technical aids with Myanmar. That’s why we are now planning to breed Vennami prawns by linking with Gold Coin Company, which knows the breeding technique. In the past, Thailand had produced saltwater tiger prawns. Now, they [Thailand] have change to 90 percent production of Vennami prawns. Likewise, 70 percent of Vietnam’s production is Vennami prawns,” Tun Win said.

At present, Myanmar has three prawn breeding zones in Yangon Region.
