The Nippon Foundation, a Japanese non-profit organization, has provided $11 million in financial assistance to build schools in Rakhine State and Shan State, according to Border Affairs Minister Thet Naing Win.
Under a government education scheme to
bring peace and development to the state, first phase and second phase
projects were launched in 2012 to build new schools and repair old ones
in Shan State, Lieutenant General Thet Naing Win said lately. The scheme
has been named as "Education for Development".
For the third phase, the Foundation has
provided $5 million for building schools in southern and northern parts
of Shan State, and $6 million for building 100 schools in Rakhine State,
he added.
The third phase project will be
implemented jointly by the ministry, the foundation, and another
organization Bridge Asia Japan during the five-year period from 2013 to
2018.
The Foundation has so far provided US$3
million in its humanitarian aid activities, in an agreement with the
government of Myanmar, directly purchasing and delivering rice and
medicine to internally displaced persons living in regions controlled by
the armed forces of ethnic groups since December 2012, according to its
website.
