Coca-Cola is launching a corporate social responsibility program in
Myanmar to help women, according to company executive.
The Coca-Cola Foundation and Pact are
expanding a program to help Myanmar women gain access to business skills
and financial services.
"The program will allow any woman to
join without restrictions. Our capacity-building team will provide the
member groups in respective towns with training programs such as how to
start up a small business and management skills," said an executive from
Coca-Cola Myanmar.
The programmes aim to improve financial
security of women. They will organise collective saving funds from which
women from different areas across the country can access low interest
loans for their businesses.
“We will form groups each containing 20
to 25 members. They will choose their leader and save money every day.
When the savings become large, the members can borrow loans with certain
agreement among them. The interest rate will be seven times lower than
the outside. The interest gained will be distributed among the members.
So, they will get money in two ways," she added.
The program has been in operation in
Yangon, Mandalay and Sagaing Region since 2012, and it will expand
further to other cities and towns across the country.
Coca-Cola's program is titled:
"Empowering 5 Million Women by 2020" and was launched in 2010. It aims
to economically empower 5 million women entrepreneurs across the world
by 2020, according to Coca-Cola.
