Myanmar’s second cabinet reshuffle since
President Thein Sein took office in March 2011 saw four ministers
reassigned, ten deputy ministers reshuffled or appointed, and two deputy
ministers dropped.
Rail transportation minister Zeya Aung
was reassigned as minister for energy, while energy minister Than Htay
became the minister for rail transportation.
Minister for Labour, Employment and
Social Security, Maung Myint, was then appointed as minister of
industry, and the industry minister Aye Myint as minister for labour,
employment and social security.
Two deputy ministers with education and
rail transportation ministries, Aye Kyu and Thura Thaung Lwin, were
allowed to resign from their posts, said the announcement from
President's Office.
Among the reshuffled deputy ministers,
five were reassigned and five newly appointed. Dr Win Myint, Dr Zaw Min
Aung, Myint Thein, Ba Shwe and Htin Aung were reassigned as deputy
ministers for President Office Department No. (1), Education, Rail
Transportation, Science and Technology, and Labour, Employment and
Social Security respectively.
Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun who is
serving as both deputy minister of home affairs and chief of Myanmar
Police Force was reappointed as home affairs deputy minister. Police
Brigadier General Zaw Win, the vice chief of Myanmar Police Force,
became the police chief.
Other appointments include Major General
Maung Maung Ohn from Commander-in-Chief Office (Army) as deputy
minister for border affairs, Rector of Yangon University of Economics Dr
San Lwin as deputy education minister, Member of Nay Pyi Taw Council Dr
Than Aung as depty health minister, and Director General at Science and
Technology Ministry Dr Aung Kyaw Myat as depty minister for the same
ministry.
Observers said those with close links to the President’s Office obtained key ministerial positions in the reshuffle.
They point out that Zeya Aung, who still
has a very short tenure at ministerial position but is the
brother-in-law of the President’s spokesperson Ye Htut, became the
minister at the ministry of energy that is economically strategic and
that needs to deal with international corporations.
Aye Myint who succeeded former industry
minister Soe Thein has had a good name in his ministry. He was now
shuffled with the labour minister Maung Myint, observers said. They
noted this cabinet reshuffle will not make difference about corruption
occurring in some government ministries.
