Myanmar authorities have been facing difficulties finding a suitable location for a new hotel zone in Mon State, Southern Myanmar according to officials.
"At the moment, we don't have any land
to designate for the hotel zone. Most of the lands in Mottama area are
religious sites," said an official from the Ministry of Hotels and
Tourism.
There are only 21 hotels with over 700
rooms in Mon State and most of them are located in Mawlamyaing and
Kyikhto. Mon State is famous for its natural scenery including the
Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock), Zinkyaik Waterfall, and the Than Lwin
River.
The state has received over 10,000 local visitors and over 5,000 foreign tourists, mostly French and German.
Htain Win, an official from the Kayin
State Immigration Department, has said that tourist arrivals will
increase after the government grants one week visas for visitors
entering from Myawaddy on the Thai - Myanmar border.
Local tour companies in Myawaddy have
already started offering tour packages for tourists travelling through
Mae Sot to Myawaddy although the government has not given an official
permission yet.
